O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa with the best singing abilities. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win in the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
